Has anyone had their car adapted from power steering to lightened power steering to help turn the steering wheel more easily?

My hands and upper limbs are really struggling with turning the steering wheel, I already have power steering but need the steering even lighter now.
Just wondered if anyone has had this done and how much it costs?

Thanks for your help
Best wishes
Rebecca

Hi, Rebecca.
I enquired about this earlier this year. It was suggested that I had a driving assessment.
Yes, it scared me silly but in fact what they meant was to see what help I would benefit
from in the present and near future, by means of adaptations. The person who came to see
me was an occupational therapist with specialist knowledge. Do you claim disability allowance
at the higher rate? If so you can it is easier to lighten the steering at the production stage
and cheaper than after delivery. A simple answer is YES but your local garage may be
diffident about it. Hope that helps Anne

Thanks Anne for your helpful reply.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you organise a driving assessment with an O.T?

I do get DLA at the higher rate, but my car isn't through motability. I believe it is easier to get the steering lightened at the time of having it and that might be the way forward to go but just looking at all the options before I make a decision.

Thanks again Anne for your help.

Best wishes
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,
I'm sorry if I confused you but the assessor happened to be an OT not through
hospital department. I was referred by Motability to my local unit.
Their number should be on their website or go to a motability car dealer for help
or ring NRAS. I was referred because my needs changed unexpectedly from
ordering a car to delivery. I find everyone very helpful and try to find the right
answer for you rather than fitting you into the mould. Hope that helps. Keep in touch
Anne
